Marking 70 Years of Rolex Submariner History

The Rolex Submariner is an iconic timepiece that has become synonymous with luxury and functionality. First introduced in 1953, it quickly gained a reputation as the ultimate diving watch, with its robust design and innovative features. The Submariner was the result of Rolex’s dedication to creating a watch that could withstand the rigors of deep-sea exploration while maintaining precision timekeeping.

The watch’s origins can be traced back to Rolex’s founder, Hans Wilsdorf, who had a vision of creating a watch that could withstand the demands of underwater exploration. Building upon the success of the Oyster case, which was introduced in 1926 and revolutionized watchmaking with its waterproof design, Wilsdorf set out to create a watch specifically tailored for divers.

The first Submariner, the reference 6204, was launched in 1953 and featured a 100-meter water resistance rating. It introduced several groundbreaking features, including a rotating bezel with a graduated scale to allow divers to measure elapsed time underwater accurately and luminescent markers on the dial for enhanced legibility in low-light conditions.

Over the years, the Submariner has undergone several significant updates and enhancements. Rolex introduced the Submariner reference 6205, which was exclusively available in 1954 and 1955, and featured an improved water resistance of up to 200 meters. This was followed by the introduction of the iconic crown guard in the reference 5512 in 1959, which further increased the watch’s durability.

In 1967, Rolex introduced the Submariner reference 1680, which was the first model to feature a date function, displayed through a magnifying Cyclops lens on the crystal. This marked a significant milestone for the Submariner, as it combined functionality with elegance. Subsequent models introduced improvements in water resistance, movement technology, and materials, solidifying the Submariner’s position as the go-to timepiece for professional divers and watch enthusiasts alike.
