Omega Speedmaster: Celebrating Yuri’s Night

Humanity’s journey into space began in earnest during the Cold War, as the United States and Soviet Union raced to achieve new heights. In 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first artificial satellite. Just four years later, on April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit the Earth—an achievement that marked a major turning point in history. This milestone paved the way for the U.S. space program to accelerate its efforts, ultimately leading to the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. When NASA set its sights on the moon following Gagarin’s historic orbit, every detail of the Apollo missions had to be meticulously planned—including timekeeping. After a series of brutal evaluations for temperature, pressure, shock, and vibration, only one emerged intact: the Omega Speedmaster. It was officially flight-qualified by NASA in 1965 and became the trusted companion for astronauts on the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.

The current Speedmaster Professional remains faithful to that original design. It features a 42mm stainless steel case, hesalite crystal, black step dial, and the iconic tachymeter bezel. Inside ticks the hand-wound Calibre 3861 movement—a modern update that’s Master Chronometer certified while keeping the manual-wind tradition alive. The chronograph layout is clean and easy to read, built for utility but appreciated for its timeless style.
