The origins of the Big Rock Tournament date back to the spring of 1957, when the existence of billfish off the North Carolina coast was more of a myth than reality. Commercial fisherman rarely traveled offshore, and tales of blue marlin sightings were largely dismissed as rumors. But one day a group of fishing enthusiasts decided to challenge these stories and formed the Fabulous Fisherman Club of Morehead City. These guys offered a cash prize for the first blue marlin caught in local waters. On September 14, 1957, angler Jimmy Croy, aboard the Mary Z with Captain K.W. “Bill” Olsen, landed a 143-pound blue marlin. This catch confirmed the presence of blue marlin in the area and set the stage for what would become a premiere sportfishing event known around the globe as The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament.

Today, tournament participants venture the sea in a fleet of state-of-the-art offshore fishing boats. The conditions on the water can be challenging, with unpredictable weather, high waves, and the relentless sun testing the determination of even the most seasoned anglers. This is where a watch like the OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M becomes key. Since 1993, the Seamaster Professional Diver has been a favorite among divers and watch enthusiasts. The current 42mm model combines stainless steel construction with a black ceramic bezel and white enamel diving scale (divers bezel). The ceramic dial features laser-engraved waves and red-highlighted “Seamaster.” Powered by the OMEGA Master Chronometer 8800, this watch delivers exceptional accuracy and performance. Some of the key features include a unidirectional rotating bezel, helium escape valve, and transparent caseback. The integrated black rubber strap is comfortable and compliments the watch’s 300 meters of water resistance. The Seamaster is designed to thrive in the toughest ocean conditions.

Both the Big Rock Tournament and OMEGA understand the importance of heritage. The tournament honors its origins every year, celebrating the local culture and the spirit of competition that has driven it for over sixty years. Similarly, OMEGA continues to draw from its rich history in watchmaking, continually refining its designs to meet current demands while retaining the essence of its past.
