Bailey's Fine Jewelry Watchmaker Receives 21st Century Certification for Watchmakers
RALEIGH, N.C. (June 10, 2010) – Jeff Murphree, a watchmaker at Bailey’s Fine Jewelry in Cameron Village, has received the 21st Century Certification for Watchmakers (CW21) from the American Watchmakers & Clockmakers Institute (AWCI). The CW21 is the new industry standard for watchmakers that addresses the changes the watch-making industry has seen in recent years, including advances in technology.
As of March 2010, the CW21 is held only by approximately 150 watchmakers in the United States and represents a new benchmark for industry standards. Obtaining certification is a lengthy and challenging process, requiring several days of both written and technical examination. As of today, Murphree is believed to be the only watchmaker certified by such standards in the Triangle, and one of only four in the state. Beginning in December of this year, only CW21 certified watchmakers will be allowed to purchase parts to repair leading industry watches such as Rolex.
Murphree began studying and pursuing the certification in January of 2009. He took six courses to prepare for the exam. He received notification early this year that he had passed the test, and additionally has been retained by AWCI to help teach the certification process to others seeking the same distinction.
“It’s quite an effort,” said Murphree. “But it’s worthwhile for the depth of knowledge and expertise you’re gaining.” Murphree began his career as a watchmaker serving as an apprentice in Jackson, Miss. He later received a degree in horology, the study of time, from Jones Junior College. He also did technical training at the Swatch Group before joining the staff at Bailey’s Fine Jewelry in 2005.
“This is the first true standard for watchmakers in the United States,” said Clyde Bailey, a former watchmaker and president and chief executive officer of Bailey’s Fine Jewelry. “It’s important in this industry to stay on top of the current benchmark for quality. We were delighted that Jeff wanted to pursue this certification, and our company and employees supported him throughout the entire process.”
The AWCI administers the CW21 four times a year and offers instructional classes for preparation. The average passage rate is 20 percent. The trend toward watch making certification reflects overall industry efforts to establish a baseline of performance in the craft and to ensure a higher quality of skill among professionals.
